The third series of the Channel 4 show, created and written by Lisa McGee, was crowned the joint winner of best comedy programme – alongside Netflix special Vir Das: Landing which first aired in 2022.
Attending the ceremony, hosted by New Zealand actor Rhys Darby, McGee posted on X (formerly Twitter) in reference to her sequinned red gown that she was “wearing my Derry City colours”.

She later added of the award: “Collection complete.”
Derry Girls, which follows a group of teenagers growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1990s before the Good Friday Agreement, has won a host of awards for both the show and its stars and its creator has since been given the green light by Channel 4 to proceed with her next TV series How To Get To Heaven From Belfast.

Derry Girls’ success continues to cement Northern Ireland’s place among thriving locations for the film and television industry, having served as the backdrop for major hits like the blockbuster fantasy series Game Of Thrones and crime thriller The Fall starring Co Down’s Jamie Dornan.
Police procedurals like Line of Duty starring Fermanagh’s Adrian Dunbar, the NI-set Blue Lights, and Hope Street – where Donagadee serves as the fictional seaside town of Port Devine – are also among the success stories to be filmed in Northern Ireland.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane Patricia Logue was among those to offer congratulations following Derry Girls’ latest accolade.
“What a night and congratulations to our own Derry Girl in New York as Lisa McGee claims the Best Comedy Emmy for Series 3 of the show,” she said.
“Derry Girls’ global reach is evident every day at our city’s visitor destinations where tourists from all over the world reference it.”
Among the British winners were actor Martin Freeman who picked up the International Emmy Award for his performance in BBC series The Responder.
Sherlock and The Hobbit star Freeman, 52, features in the Liverpool-set thriller following his character Chris across six night shifts as an urgent response police officer. It has been praised for its gritty style and narrative.

The Smeds And The Smoos won the award for best animation for children.
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s story, which first aired on the BBC last December, shows two young protagonists, Janet and Bill, who fall in love and run away together, forcing their red and blue families to put aside their differences to search for them.
The International Emmy for best documentary went to BBC film Mariupol: The People’s Story about the war-torn Ukrainian city.
