A LEADING Aberdeen-based group of electrical companies is lending its support to a local charity which keeps children smiling through their toughest battles.

AEL has already donated £5000 to the work of Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs which supports children and young people aged 0-19 who have a cancer diagnosis on the Schiehallion Day Care Unit at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh and the medical ward at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.

The charity was set up in May 2016 in memory of Hamish Leonard Dear who was born in October 2012 and died suddenly and tragically of complications related to stage 4 Neuroblastoma in November 2015.  Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs is based upon his family’s experience of having a child receiving treatment for cancer and their desire to provide a “warm hug” from Hamish to make the good days great and help make special memories.

The money donated by AEL was part of £13,000 which was raised at the charity’s recent annual Remembrance Ceilidh, held at Maryculter House Hotel.  Further fundraising activities are planned by the AEL team throughout 2024, including participation in the annual Aberdeen Kiltwalk on June 2nd.

Meanwhile AEL is marking its tenth anniversary in Houston, Texas by supporting Nery’s Promise a small Christian anti-poverty charity which helps children facing tough times in and around its home district of Richmond.

Commenting on their charitable plans for 2024, President of AEL’s US operations Alan Mackie said: “We are pleased to show our support for the work of these two important charities.  Although thousands of miles apart, they share the common aim of helping children experiencing unimaginable challenges and we hope that our support will play a part in continuing their excellent work.”

A spokesperson for Nery’s Promise added: “The North Richmond area has been identified as 80% poverty level.  Without your support these kids in the community will not have chance to experience what life can really be for them if their environment does not change.  With your help and donation, Nery’s Promise will be able to give a child hope, love and a safety zone where they can grow up to be responsible young adults, by giving them a hand up not a handout.”

Founded in 1981, AEL is an international brand providing electrical products and services to the onshore, offshore, renewable, petrochemical, marine and industrial sectors.  While proud to remain a family business, AEL has the global capability to offer a broad range of electrical products and services.  AEL operates from a network of strategically placed international offices as well as its HQ in Aberdeen.  To find out more, visit www.ael-electrical.com
